Savory French Toast
 
Makes 4 servings
Ingredients
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • 8 slices thick-cut white bread
  • 1 cup shredded fontina cheese
  • Warm pepper jelly and bacon, to serve
  • Garnish: chopped fresh thyme
Instructions
  1. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, thyme, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  2. In a large nonstick skillet, melt 2 tablespoons butter over medium-high heat, swirling to coat skillet.
  3. Dip 3 bread slices in egg mixture; place in skillet. Reduce heat to medium; cook until golden brown, about 2 minutes. Using a spatula, turn bread slices, and immediately top each with 2 tablespoons cheese. Cook until bottom is golden brown and cheese is melted, about 2 minutes. Place on a serving plate. Repeat procedure with remaining butter, remaining bread slices, and remaining egg mixture. Serve with warm jelly and bacon. Garnish with thyme, if desired.
