Yield: approximately 3 dozen bourbon balls
Ingredients
- 12 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces
- 6 ounces semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
- 3 large eggs
- 1⁄2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 3⁄4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1⁄4 teaspoon ground anise
- 1⁄4 cup bourbon
- 1⁄2 teaspoon orange zest
- 1 tablespoon fresh orange juice
- 1⁄2 cup turbinado sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°. Spray a large rimmed baking sheet with nonstick baking spray with flour. Set aside.
- In a small microwave-safe bowl, microwave butter and chocolate in 30-second intervals, stirring in between each interval until melted.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, brown sugar, vanilla, and salt. Add chocolate mixture to egg mixture, whisking until smooth.
- In another medium bowl, whisk together flour, cinnamon, and anise. Add flour mixture to egg mixture, stirring until combined. Pour batter into prepared pan, smoothing top with an offset spatula.
- Bake until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out with some crumbs attached, 7 to 9 minutes. Let cool in pan on a wire rack. Break into 1-inch pieces.
- Transfer pieces to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. With mixer on low speed, add bourbon and orange zest and juice, beating until mixture comes together and forms a ball.
- Using a tablespoon, scoop dough, and shape into 1-inch balls. Roll in turbinado sugar to coat. Refrigerate approximately 2 hours. Serve chilled or at room temperature. Cover, and refrigerate up to 1 week.
