Painted Christmas Cookies

Ingredients
  1. Basic Sugar Cookie Dough (link to recipe at top of page)
  2. 1⁄4 (16-ounce) package chocolate-flavored candy coating
  3. Meringue Powder Icing (recipe follows)
  4. Garnish: sanding sugar and nonpareils
Instructions
  1. Prepare Basic Sugar Cookie Dough according to directions through Step 4.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to 1⁄4-inch thickness. Using assorted Christmas cutters, cut as many cookies as possible, rerolling scraps no more than twice. Bake and let cool as directed in Step 6.
  3. Melt candy coating according to package directions. Place in a pastry bag fitted with a small round tip.
  4. Paint cookies with Meringue Powder Icing or outline in candy coating. Decorate with sanding sugar and nonpareils, if desired. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Meringue Powder Icing
Yield: approximately 1 1/4 cups

Ingredients
  1. 2 tablespoons cold water
  2. 1 tablespoon plus 1 1/2 teaspoons meringue powder
  3. 1 cup confectioners' sugar
  4. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  5. Gel food coloring in various colors
Instructions
  1. In a small bowl, beat 2 tablespoons water and meringue powder with a wire whisk until frothy. Whisk in confectioners’ sugar and vanilla until smooth.
  2. Divide icing into smaller bowls, and add desired amount of food coloring. Use immediately, or cover tightly until ready to use.
