Tailgating and Townhopping Around Starkville

Starkville is known as “Mississippi’s College Town.” That is on full, glorious display during a game weekend. Of course, SEC football is a huge draw here, but baseball is also cause to celebrate and, really, you owe it to yourself to enjoy an afternoon at Dudy Noble Field (a.k.a. “The Carnegie Hall of Baseball”). From tennis to disc golf, if there is a sporting event in town, rest assured there is going to be a pre-party and a post-party—or in the case of the annual Dachshund Derby, a nonstop party.

Here are a few tips to make the most of any time in Starkville. First of all, get your Cities Of The SEC Pass to earn points toward prizes while you explore and enjoy Starkville.

When it comes to tailgating, The Junction is the place to be. This typically serene green space across from Davis Wade Stadium transforms into a revelrous scene on game day morning. Get there early and make your way through the sea of maroon to slap high-fives with the Bulldog players and coaches on their traditional pre-game Dawg Walk through The Junction. Don’t forget to snap your selfie with the statue of Bully, the bulldog. Bulldog fans are a hospitable bunch. Strike up a friendly conversation or, better yet, ring a cowbell, and you’re sure to find a plate. If you’re preparing for your own spread, Cater’s Market offers a variety of party platters. Be sure to stroll over to the nearby MAFES Sale Store for some renowned Mississippi State Edam cheese to take home. Pro tip: Treat yourself to a scoop or two of their muscadine ripple ice cream.

The Cotton District is an easy walk from campus and thus becomes a de facto home base for any sporting celebration.  Here, you’ll find a bustling strip of restaurants, bars, and boutiques. A few local favorites include nachos and margaritas on the patio at Bin 612, smokehouse barbecue and ice-cold pints on the balcony of Two Brothers, brick oven pizza at Boardtown Pizza, and the lively international fare of Arepas Coffee + Bar. If you really want to lay a foundation, try the Freshman 15 at Bulldog Burger. Or if you’re bouncing back from a night out, brunch at Commodore Bob’s will get you back on your feet. It should be noted that the Cotton District has been designated a go-cup zone. So, order a beverage from any restaurant or bar and take it for a sip and stroll along the mural-lined sidewalks.

If you really want to get into the Bulldog vibe, do a little wardrobe shopping while you roam. From T-shirts to Junction chic, you will find something to suit your style in the Cotton District and Main Street boutiques. Fashionable mainstays include Reeds, The Olive Tree, George Mary’s, and B-Unlimited. Cowbells are always in season.
