Indeed, much of the older manufacturing of cast iron was located in the northern United States, where industry came a little quicker than in the agricultural South. But what we may have lacked in the making, we made up for in the using—our stoves and tables wouldn’t be complete without the familiar black skillets and Dutch ovens bearing meat, soups, and cornbread. When I originally picked up the phone to talk with Mary, the first thing she asked was, “Does it matter that I’m a Yankee?” I assured her that our love for cast iron knows no bounds.
