The Pan Handler: The Life of a Cast-Iron Collector

Customers are happy with their buys and seem to be grateful that Mary is helping to recover pieces of the past. Mary understands that there are those who can’t afford many of her pieces, however, and occasionally holds giveaways on her blog. She loves a heartwarming story, often choosing a prize winner who would truly benefit from the piece. After working so closely with these pans, she wants them to go to a good home. The website hosts a tight-knit group—Mary and her customers occasionally communicate back and forth about how the pan or other purchase is being used. Much like the quality of the piece, it seems that the quality of the business is positively affected by having people involved.

Her business has also grown to include some travel, to visit auctions, estate sales, or other collectors. She dreams of taking a trip to Erie, Pennsylvania, home of her beloved Griswold. “I think there’s probably a hotbed of cast iron out there,” Mary says.
